Algonquin Provincial Park

Algonquin Provincial Park, renowned for its breathtaking wilderness and rich biodiversity, recently unveiled the new Fork Lake Trail—an innovative interpretive hiking experience designed to connect visitors with the park’s unique natural habitats. At the heart of the project is a thoughtfully engineered floating boardwalk that allows hikers to explore sensitive wetland areas without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. NyDock was proud to contribute our durable, environmentally conscious HDPE pontoon technology to this landmark trail, helping bring to life a sustainable pathway that educates, inspires, and protects.

A step-by-step look at Algonquin Park’s floating boardwalk and its innovative design.

Project Goal

The objective was to create an accessible, educational interpretive trail starting at Algonquin Park’s Visitor Centre. The trail was designed to showcase the park’s distinctive ecosystems while preserving their integrity. The 2.4-kilometre loop—officially named the Fork Lake Trail—features challenging elevation changes, scenic lookouts, spruce bogs, and Northern Red Oak forest. Educational signage along the route encourages environmental awareness and stewardship among visitors.

A central challenge in the trail’s development was to design a durable, low-impact path through marshy and wetland terrain that would not damage fragile habitats or obstruct the natural beauty of the landscape. The solution needed to blend seamlessly into the environment, remain stable across seasonal conditions, and require minimal maintenance over time.

Our Process

Collaborative design and tailored engineering

NyDock worked in close partnership with The Friends of Algonquin Park, Ontario Parks, and trail design engineers to understand the unique environmental and logistical demands of the project. This collaboration ensured that the materials and construction techniques selected aligned with both conservation goals and visitor safety.

The trail called for a creative solution where floating boardwalks could cross over wetlands and bogs without anchoring deep into sensitive ground. To meet these requirements, we supplied our signature high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pontoons. Known for their durability, UV and chemical resistance, and maintenance-free performance, HDPE pontoons offered a low-impact, long-lasting alternative to traditional construction methods.

Each floating section was custom-engineered to fit the trail’s varying curves, slopes, and elevation changes. Our design team ensured a consistently level and secure walking surface capable of supporting both pedestrian flow and interpretive signage, maintaining an uninterrupted educational experience for hikers.

Precision installation with minimal disturbance

Installation was carefully staged to reduce any disruption to the surrounding environment. To further minimize ecological impact and avoid interfering with park visitors, installation took place during the winter months—well outside of peak visitor season. Working alongside trail builders, we launched pontoon sections from existing boardwalk areas, eliminating the need for heavy machinery or excessive site disturbance.

The HDPE pontoons were installed in long, continuous runs and securely anchored to the trailbed. This approach allowed for natural movement with seasonal water level fluctuations while maintaining the structural stability of the walkway. The result was a boardwalk that feels solid underfoot yet floats effortlessly above the wetland terrain.

Success Story

A floating boardwalk that protects nature and tells its story

The Fork Lake Trail officially opened on June 28, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, guided tours, and the release of interpretive guidebooks. The project has been celebrated as a major achievement in sustainable trail design. Visitors, conservationists, and park rangers alike have praised the floating boardwalk for its ability to immerse hikers in the landscape without harming it.

The HDPE pontoon system has successfully protected bog habitats by eliminating soil compaction and allowing natural water flow beneath the boardwalk.

NyDock’s involvement in this transformative project underscores our commitment to sustainable outdoor infrastructure. Our HDPE pontoon solution enabled the creation of a world-class interpretive trail that balances engineering excellence with ecological responsibility. By helping protect one of Ontario’s most cherished natural environments, we’re proud to support the continued education and enjoyment of generations to come.
